How to Get Premium Granite and Quartz for Less.

What is a "Remnant"?

If you are new to the world of stone fabrication, you might not know about the hidden goldmine sitting in our Calgary warehouse: The Remnant Section (sometimes affectionately called the "Bone Yard").

When we fabricate a kitchen island from a giant 10-foot slab of granite or quartz, we rarely use 100% of the material. The remaining piece—often large enough for a bathroom vanity or a coffee table—is called a remnant.

Because the main project has already covered the cost of the slab, we can offer these high-quality off-cuts at a significant discount.

Why Buy Remnants?

1. Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget

Have you fallen in love with a Level 5 Exotic Granite or a premium Calacatta Quartz that is out of your budget? Buying a full slab might cost thousands, but a remnant of that same exotic stone might only cost a few hundred dollars. It allows you to put luxury materials in smaller spaces like powder rooms or laundry rooms.

2. Immediate Availability

Ordering a specific full slab can sometimes take weeks if it needs to be imported. Remnants are sitting in our warehouse right now. You can walk in, pick your piece, and we can often fabricate it much faster than a standard order.

3. Eco-Friendly Choice

Using remnants is a sustainable building practice. By using these off-cuts instead of ordering new material, you are reducing waste and minimizing the environmental impact of mining and shipping new stone.

The Best Projects for Remnants

Remnants come in all shapes and sizes, but they are typically perfect for:

  • Bathroom Vanities: Standard vanities (30" - 60") are the #1 use for remnants.

  • Fireplace Hearths: A durable strip of granite in front of your fireplace.

  • Laundry Room Counters: A small folding station over your washer/dryer.

  • Coffee & Side Tables: Custom furniture pieces.

  • Shower Benches & Niches: Matching stone accents inside your shower.

How to Shop for Remnants

Shopping for remnants is a bit like a treasure hunt. Here is how to do it successfully at Galaxy Granite:

  1. Bring Measurements: This is crucial. We need to know if the piece is big enough for your project. Measure your cabinet length and depth (usually 21" or 22").

  2. Be Open-Minded: Inventory changes daily. You might come in looking for grey but fall in love with a stunning white quartz.

  3. Check the Size: Remember, we need to cut the stone straight. If a remnant looks "just barely" big enough, it might be too small once we square off the rough edges. Trust our fabricators to tell you if it will work.

Final Tip: Don't Wait!

Remnants are one-of-a-kind. If you see a piece you love, put a deposit on it. Unlike full slabs where we can order more, once a remnant is gone, it’s gone forever.
